Tires, Wipers, and Brakes: Best Times To Replace

Car warranties help protect you against costly repairs to car parts that aren't designed to be replaced over time, but you can extend the overall life of your car by regularly replacing the parts that are. Which parts are designed to be replaced and when should you have it done? Here are some guidelines that will help you keep your car in tiptop shape, and avoid other inconvenient repairs.

Tires

A typical set of tires should last 25,000 miles or more, but results vary depending on how you drive. There are two ways to extend the life of your tires: regular rotation and proper inflation. Make sure you have your tires rotated every 8,000 miles or so, and check tire pressure weekly.

If you start to slide or lose control of your car, you probably need to have your tires replaced. You can also check your tire tread with a penny. Simply turn it upside down (Abe is looking to the left) and place it in the tread of your tire. If you can see the top of Abe's head, you need new tires.

Wipers

It's amazing how many people are content to drive with poorly functioning wipers! This isn't just inconvenient. It's dangerous. Make sure you change your wipers regularly.

It's a good idea to change your wiper blades every 6 months or so. They're cheap, readily available, and easy to install. However, if you'd rather wait, be sure to get new wipers as soon as you see any streaking, hear any chattering, or notice that they're not keeping your windshield clear.

Brakes

Your brake pads and rotors are designed so that they degrade over time. Failure to change them when needed will cause major damage to other components. But how often should you have them serviced? Every car, driver, and situation is different, so there is no hard and fast rule. Some people may go years without needing new breaks, while others will need them every 6 months.

As a general rule, have your brakes examined whenever you hear consistent brake squealing during regular driving, as this is a sign that your brakes either need changing now, or will very soon. If you ever hear grinding or very high-pitched noises from your brakes, have them examined immediately, as it may be a sign of a major problem.
