Driving Tips for Weather Evacuations

driving tips for weather evacuations

The National Weather Service lists that the 2011 Atlantic hurricane season will last roughly until November 30. And with the widespread devastation left by Hurricane Irene still fresh in our minds, preparedness can make all the difference in the event of an extreme weather evacuation. Study these car travel tips to keep you and your family safe should the next storm of the century come knocking soon.

Have emergency supplies ready
Don't wait until the last second to pack your vehicle. At the first sign of serious trouble, prepare a list of necessary items and have them ready to go - batteries, food and water, sleeping bags, toiletries, extra clothes, important papers (proof of insurance and vehicle registration), a full tank of gas, and car cell phone chargers.

Don't travel far
Weather conditions can change from bad to worse quickly. Plan on a safe destination within a reasonable driving distance, and try to travel on familiar routes. The longer you stay on the road, the greater the risk.

Stay in touch
It's important to let family members know of your whereabouts whenever possible. During a storm, you may lose contact for long periods of time, especially if you're not in the same vehicle. Keeping close family in the loop before bad weather hits allows them to inform others of your situation before telephone lines or internet access is lost.
