Essential Items to Keep in Your Car During the Winter

While there are several emergency items you should consider storing in your vehicle during the year, winter brings a number of obstacles that require unique seasonal tools to handle. Here are some car safety tips on items that will help you tackle the snow and ice-covered roads this winter.
Shovel
Keeping a shovel in your trunk will come in handy for digging out your car when the snow becomes too much to handle. Whether you're stuck in a snow bank on the side of the road, trying to get through the wall of snow the plow created at the end of your driveway or simply clearing out the last available parking space, a snow shovel is a must-have item for winter driving.
Salt and sand
Ice covered roads can spring up out of nowhere, creating a traction nightmare for your vehicle. If your tires can't seem to grip the road, consider hauling a couple of bags of salt and sand to make things easier.
Ice scraper
Ice can build up on your car in a short amount of time if the conditions are right, greatly reducing visibility on the road. Keep an ice scraper in your car for quick ice and snow removal.
Blankets
Just in case you find yourself unable to leave your vehicle while help is on the way, it's important to have a blanket for extra added warmth! Even if your vehicle won't turn on to provide you with heat, using a blanket will help you stay warm.
Cell Phone
Most of us have cell phones that we use on a daily basis. However, if you're not one who uses a cell phone daily, be sure to at least have a cell phone handy in your car with a charger for emergency cases. If you're stuck in your car because of snow and can't walk to the nearest store or house to use a phone to call for help, you will be prepared with your cell phone and charger handy.
First-Aid Kit
A first-aid kit is something everyone should have in their vehicle no matter the season. If you find yourself with minor injuries in your car while waiting for help to come, a general first-aid kit will help you tend to your own wounds until help arrives. Being prepared during the winter months, as with any season, is always the best way to be!
