Got the Blues? There's a Highway for That

Running from Memphis along the Mississippi River, Route 61, also known as the Blues Highway, felt the wheels of cars driven by legendary artists like Muddy Waters, B.B. King and John Lee Hooker. To this day there are still guitarists lining the road, strumming their pain away. To take a musical journey, consider some of the following car travel tips for a trip down memory lane.
Open up your tour with a bit of history at the Stax Museum of American Soul Music in Memphis. Peruse hundreds of photographs, videos, costumes and instruments of musicians who played under the Stax label, including the great Otis Redding.
Before leaving town, take a stroll down Beale Street where you can catch some live shows. Although tourists regularly frequent the area, these clubs reek of authenticity, where all-American men sing about their all-American problems. Feel free to eat some of those blues away at one of Memphis' famed barbecue joints.
Head down to Clarksdale, Mississippi, to cap off your trip, where you can get a taste of some folk art and hobnob with the many writers and musicians who visit the area. If you still have some anguish left to share, head down into the Delta to other historical music hubs like Rosedale and Vicksburg.
