Creative Ways to Use Maps on Your Road Trip

Many people have GPS systems in their cars nowadays. Those who don't may print out a map and directions or use a smartphone GPS tracker before setting out on a road trip. However, maps don't have to be relegated to a purely practical function. Take advantage of these navigational tools to keep the whole family entertained by implementing these car travel tips.
Keeping track of cities. Print out a map that lists the cities you will be driving through and encourage your children to look out for road signs welcoming them to town. You can turn this into a friendly competition by rewarding the little one who spots the sign first.
Coloring books. For younger kids, a coloring book that includes state maps can be more accessible. You can sketch your own map for them to fill in or ask them to draw their version of notable sights that you pass on the trip.
Calculating distance. Older children can be tasked with calculating how close you are to the destination. Provide them with a map so they can determine how much longer the trip will last for themselves, instead of asking you.
