Many tourism websites in the Northeast feature interactive maps that display when and where you can find fall foliage at its finest. Plan a day trip with the kids to see the bright reds, oranges and yellows that characterize autumn before the leaves all turn to brown.

Whale watching
Winter brings rough storms and freezing temperatures to the ocean, but there is still plenty of good whale watching to be had before the season is over. There are dozens of private boats and educational centers that provide an afternoon on the high seas to observe these majestic beasts in their natural habitats.
