Famous Movies about Cars

Americans have been obsessed with cars and speed since Henry Ford first unveiled the Model T in the early 1900s, so it's no surprise that racing has been a common center point in many films. These testaments to gears and gasoline have become classics in the American canon. Here are some car travel tips on a few of the most famous car movies.

The Cannonball Run
One of the most popular racing movies ever made, this 1981 comedy stars Burt Reynolds, Roger Moore, Farrah Fawcett, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Jr. and Dom DeLuise. The Cannonball Run focuses on a cross-country race between various freewheeling teams, with protagonists J.J. McClure (Reynolds) and Victor Prinzim (DeLuise) driving a modified ambulance.

The Fast and the Furious
Spawning four sequels, 2001's The Fast and the Furious centers on Los Angeles' underground street racing and its relation to a series of truck hijackings. Undercover detective Brian O'Conner (Paul Walker) infiltrates a group of racers led by Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) to gather more information, but soon finds that he may be closer to the truth than he originally suspected.

Gone in 60 Seconds
Starring Nicolas Cage and Angelina Jolie, Gone in 60 Seconds tells the story of retired car thief Memphis Raines, who is called out of retirement to pay off a debt of 50 stolen vehicles in one night to save his brother's life. The film features a plethora of beautiful and exotic cars, most specifically "Eleanor," a stunning 1967 Shelby Mustang GT 500.
