Safe Alternatives to Having a Designated Driver

With the holiday season in full gear, many people will be heading out to festive Christmas, Hanukkah and New Year's Eve celebrations to spend time with family, friends and coworkers. As many of these social gatherings will include alcohol, it's important to designate a sober driver. But what if you're simply unable to find someone willing to do the job? Here are some car safety tips for alternatives to having a designated driver.
Public transportation
For those living in urban areas, public transportation is a safe, convenient and inexpensive way to let someone else take you home. However, make sure you're aware of the nearest bus or subway stop, fees and hours of operation if you plan to rely on city transportation. Private or university shuttles are another great resource for areas with limited public transportation options, according to the Journal Sentinel.
Safe Ride programs
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration suggests the Safe Ride programs for party-goers unable to find a designated driver of their own. These programs exist in a variety of cities and towns and are often operated by private owners or through public-private cooperation.
Taxis
Though not always the most affordable of car travel tips, calling a taxi is often the easiest and most direct way to get home after a night on the town. Many cab services operate 24 hours a day and can pick you up at almost any location. To cut down on heavy cab fares, share a ride home with some friends.
