Three Summer Drives That Teach Geography

Yellowstone Mineral Springs.

For those who are interested in the earth and the processes that change it, there are certain road trips and particular locations that are far too fascinating to miss. And if you're into photography, landscapes can be the most incredible features of any summer drive.

The landscape of North Carolina is possibly one of the most classic examples of the term "Piedmont," which means foothills. The best way to witness this is by starting at the beaches of the Outer Banks, where the massive coastal dunes have been gradually transferred across the ocean from the Sahara. Heading to the Smokey Mountains from the coast, you will notice a constant uphill gradient west of Raleigh.

Believe it or not, the central interior of our country contains one of the best examples of seismic activity. In 1812, New Madrid, Missouri experienced an earthquake with a 9.0 magnitude - slightly worse than the recent Japanese quake. This event actually separated a western portion of Kentucky from the rest of the state. It also caused the Mississippi River to flow backwards for several days. Today you can visit the banks of the river near New Madrid and view the effects of the disaster.

Yellowstone, with its gigantic geysers and vivid hot springs, is one of the planet's most beautiful - but potentially dangerous - spots. Underneath the alluring landscape lies a dormant super volcano that sparks the interest of scientists around the globe.

Drives like this can provide your family with unforgettable experiences while providing a little geography education as well.
