Tips for Being a Helpful Road Trip Navigator

Tips for Being a Helpful Road Trip Navigator

When embarking on a lengthy road trip, many drivers appreciate the company and comfort of traveling with a passenger. In addition to sharing the monotonies of the road, a responsible passenger can also play an important safety role as navigator and co-pilot. Here are some car travel tips for being a helpful road trip navigator.

Take control of the map
Before embarking on the trip, both the driver and navigator should become familiar with the overall route and approximate travel time - this will help alert you to inconsistencies or wrong turns on the road. During the trip, the navigator can study the map or control the navigation device in order to leave the driver free to focus solely on traffic conditions.

Second set of eyes
Even when the driver knows which way to go, it can be helpful to have a second set of eyes to look out for approaching road signs or changes in traffic. After hours of staring at unchanging highway scenery, drivers can develop tunnel vision and miss important turns or stops. Navigators can inform drivers of when and where they should change course.

Manage supplies
Drivers often become distracted when searching for snacks, drinks, new radio stations or electronic devices while traveling. Passengers should take over all other duties within the car like selecting music or looking through luggage to leave the driver focused on the road ahead.
