Tips for Safe Driving on the Highway

Highways are designed to be safe – traffic moves in one direction, there are no intersections or stops and plenty of lanes for increased traffic. However, a preventable number of accidents are caused by nervous or unsure drivers who simply don't know the proper procedures for sharing the highway. Here are some car travel tips that will ensure you have a safe ride the next time you take the interstate.
Always pass on the left - this is one of the first rules you learn in driver's education classes, and yet so many people seem unaware of its importance on the road. When you pass on the right, you run the risk of colliding with someone merging into the driving lane. That being said, always check your mirrors and look over your shoulder before switching lanes.
While you generally want to stay in the right lane for traveling, drivers need to be aware of cars merging into traffic from an entrance ramp. Many don't have stop signs, so traffic flow is continuous. This can cause a problem if you remain in the right lane as they're trying to merge.
