Top Three Historical Drives

Even without the background knowledge, certain locations can present travelers with a ghostly aura - a feeling that someone important placed a footprint in the exact same spot, or that a world-changing event had occurred there centuries before. Historical landmarks are national treasures that every family member can enjoy, including children. There are several areas around the country that can add some excitement to the typical family outing.

Gettysburg. This popular Civil War battlefield in Pennsylvania is both eerie and mesmerizing, as it captivates visitors with rolling hills, grassy pastures, preserved buildings and several memorials. Although it attracts tourists from all over, the monument is much quieter during the peak of winter - which is perfect for paranormal enthusiasts who hope to hear the whispers of a deceased soldier.

Appomattox. The southern Virginia battlefield/courthouse is the epitome of southern culture, as it was the site that marked the official end of the Civil War. The last engagement occurred here, right before General Lee met with General Grant to surrender. This land is divided by one of the most unique fencing networks in the country, creating a spectacle that enraptures photographers and historians.

Deadwood. Located in the Black Hills of South Dakota, this town is almost completely preserved in the fashion of the Wild West. Gun-slinger shows are reenacted right in the street on a daily basis, which can excite adults and children alike. It's also within a close proximity to tourist attractions like Mount Rushmore, Badlands National Park and the Wind Caves.

To discover the roots of our culture, every American should eventually embark on a drive to some of the most prominent historical landmarks. Travelers will often return from these locations feeling rejuvenated, as if a sense of adventure has somehow brightened their lives.
