Traveling in the Event of an Unexpected Snowstorm

As a general rule, you should try to stay off the road during hazardous winter weather. While keeping abreast of recent weather trends can help, sometimes you may find yourself suddenly driving in the middle of a freak blizzard. Here are some car safety tips and car travel tips for traveling in the event of an unexpected snowstorm.
Sliding
If your car suddenly loses traction and begins to slide in the snow, keep calm and remember to turn your wheel in the direction you're skidding, according to the Wall Street Journal. Try to straighten out your vehicle to regain control and make sure to keep your eyes focused on the road.
Slow down and brake carefully
The second you see snowfall begin to increase, Weather.com advises that you reduce your speed and allow for greater following distance (about triple the normal distance) between yourself and other vehicles on the road. You should also brake slowly to ensure you don't lose traction.
Watch the road
As the temperature begins to drop, portions of the road such as bridges, overpasses and poorly-maintained roads will be among the first to freeze, even if there isn't ice on the rest of the roads, according to Weather.com. You should also keep your eyes open for near-invisible black ice.
