Accommodating Dogs on Long Road Trips

Depending on your pup, road trips can either be a pleasure cruise or a never-ending nightmare. Even the shortest drive can leave your pooch howling about a suspected trip to the vet. Here are a few car travel tips to keep you and your pet happy travelers.
Go for a pre-drive walk
Dogs need exercise, and they tend to be happier when they get it. Before hitting the road, take him for a quick walk around the neighborhood. Your dog will be tired and happy by the time you get him in the car, and you'll provide him with an opportunity to answer nature's call. You definitely don't want that happening mid-drive.
Pack some toys
You know that favorite toy you had as a kid? Well your dog has one too. And nothing's better to calm his nerves… even if it's been partially torn to shreds. Pack your dog's crate with some of his favorite toys and a warm blanket to make the back seat feel a little more like home.
Make frequent stops
Sitting for hours on end in a tiny car can wear down anyone, especially your pup. Dogs are used to roaming around, sleeping in different spots every 15 minutes, and are generally antsy. Try to stop as often as you can to give you and your dog a chance to stretch, breathe some fresh air, and make a bathroom stop. Have some water handy too. Your dog's not going to have any luck ordering water from the drive-thru window.
